Union Athletics FAQs

On June 30, President Harris announced the College’s plan for Fall 2020, “Union Where You Are.” On July 13, the College announced that Union’s fall sports teams would not compete in the Fall 2020 season.  The decision was difficult knowing the importance of intercollegiate athletics and club sports to many of our students. It was necessary to be in line with the best practices that will be implemented for the entire campus community including social distancing, face coverings and other safety measures for our campus.

On July 22, the Liberty League announced that it would cancel all conference competition and championships through December 31, 2020. The College continues to work with ECAC Hockey members to assess the 2020-21 season as well.

We hope that these FAQs answer many of the questions brought about by this decision. For any additional questions, please contact Jim McLaughlin '93, Director of Athletics, at mclaughj@union.edu.

  • Union will rely on all of our community members to keep each other safe by our behaviors in the upcoming term and beyond. We do not believe that the expectations of limited visitors to campus, social distancing, face coverings and limited off-campus travel make intercollegiate athletics competition for fall teams possible. While plans for a safe return to campus continue to develop, it was important for us to let Union student-athletes understand what the fall will look like now so that they can make the best decision among the exciting “Union Where You Are” options for the fall term.

  • Yes, student-athletes will train with small groups under the instruction of their coaches. Team activities will include training, strength and conditioning, practice sessions, leadership training and other team bonding activities.

  • All teams will have access to training facilities, contingent upon New York State guidelines. Our strength and conditioning staff will also work to create additional outdoor workouts for teams throughout the fall term.

  • Student-athletes will continue to have access to treatment from the athletic training staff throughout the fall term. The health and safety of our students continues to be our primary objective.

  • The College and the Liberty League will continue to monitor health and safety guidelines as well as New York State and NCAA guidelines to ensure a safe return to competition. Union College and the Liberty League will be updating league schedules for winter sports teams (basketball, swimming & diving, indoor track & field) with competition beginning in January 2021. Winter sports teams will practice and train during the fall trimester in preparation for the start of competition scheduled to begin in January.

We remain in continued conversation with our ECAC Hockey League members and will announce updates for men's and women's hockey as soon as they are finalized.

  • Spring sport student-athletes will be provided with the same opportunities as fall and winter athletes to begin training opportunities within NCAA guidelines for their non-traditional segment.

  • Per NCAA rules, student-athletes do not use a season of eligibility until after the first date of competition. Student-athletes can practice with their teams throughout the fall term and will not use a season of eligibility.

  • Student-athletes will return to campus with the general student population. Please visit the “Union Where You Are” page for dates. Fall term classes will begin on Wednesday, September 9.

  • Student-athletes who choose the return-to-campus option for the fall term may participate in physical practice activities with their team. Students are encouraged to pursue the option that best suits their academic and personal interests. For students that choose a remote learning option, coaches will continue to engage students remotely and provide fitness packets that can be followed away from campus.

  • Union is engaged in conversations with peer institutions that will also not be competing this fall. Our hope is to provide student-athletes with competitive opportunities at a later time, contingent upon guidance from the NCAA.

  • Yes. We will be sending information electronically in the coming weeks to be completed prior to arrival to ensure eligibility for practice opportunities in the fall.

  • Yes, club sports will not be engaged in intercollegiate play this fall. We are exploring creative ways to allow for club members to still be engaged and involved in their sport while following all necessary health and safety guidelines. The Office of Student Activities will be working closely with club leadership to come up with creative ways to engage with their club members.

  • The College is exploring opportunities for intramurals, recreation and wellness classes to be offered in the fall term. The curriculum for these offerings is in development, to provide experiences both in person and virtually in compliance with all state and College health and safety guidelines.
