Jue (Joy) Wang is an associate professor of mathematics. Wang (meaning king) is the most common surname in China. Jue (the name given to her by her grandfather) means a pair of jades joined together. Joy is from Shanghai, a city with the world’s largest bus system. She likes drawing, photography, origami and computer graphics. She enjoys hiking, traveling and adventures. Joy has been to the southernmost point of continental Asia and the northwestern-most country in Africa.
Joy started tenure-track at Union in 2011 and was a visitor before that. Her research interests span from fluid dynamics to image analysis and processing to medical imaging to cancer/disease detection to data science and machine learning. She views teaching as more than imparting knowledge; it is inspiring change.
FIRST APP YOU LOOK AT IN THE MORNING:
Listening to a podcast on my way to work
ONE BOOK YOU HAVE READ MULTIPLE TIMES:
“One Hundred Thousand Whys” (a Chinese science book series) when I was little.
BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED:
Smile, exercise, go out and explore, and get plenty of sleep.
FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS:
Wherever flowers are blooming. I’ve captured thousands of photos of the campus. I hope to see a scent camera in the near future.
GO-TO BREAKFAST:
Fruits. I like all kinds. They are apple-solutely pear-fect to start a cherry-ful, mango-nificent day.
FAVORITE PODCAST:
“Freakonomics,” “No Stupid Questions,” and “The Naked Scientists” are my top three among the 17 to which I currently subscribe.
ONE SKILL YOU WISH YOU HAD:
Play the bamboo flute. Its bright and rich timbre flows harmoniously with nature. My father can play it. I could barely make a sound on it.
LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT YOU:
I once tried water fasting for a full week. No food or juice or tea, just plain water, and yes, I was also teaching two courses then. That was my first and only fasting experiment and quite an interesting experience. By the end of day 7, I actually felt no hunger and had good energy, and my brain felt sharper.
THREE DINNER PARTY GUESTS (living or deceased):
Walt Disney. I’m a big fan of Disney. Mel Blanc. He was the voice behind Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and 400+ characters in 5,000+ cartoons. Laiming Wan. He pioneered the Chinese animation industry and breathed life into the Monkey King. Oh, of course, we would produce an animated original “Mickey meets the Monkey King.”
FIRST CONCERT:
Sigh. I cannot retrieve my memory orb of the first concert but I really enjoy the SPAC summer concerts in Saratoga Springs.
