College embraces history of 1800s friendship that broke racial barriers

As part of Black History Month, WNYT-13 explores the story of Moses Viney, a runaway slave from Maryland who escaped to Schenectady on the Underground Railroad. Viney was a coachman, messenger and constant companion of Eliphalet Nott, the longtime president of Union who eventually secured Viney’s freedom.

WNYT is an NBC affiliate.

Two faculty members are included in the March/April issue of Women@Work, a publication of the Times Union.

The issue focuses on STEM education.

Rebecca Cortez, associate professor of mechanical engineering and director of undergraduate research, is among the 10 Capital Region women in science and technology sure to inspire.

Valerie Barr, professor of computer science and chair of ACM-W, the Association for Computing Machinery Council on Women in Computing, discusses gender disparity in the workforce.

Alumni in the news: Kathy Magliato '85

Heart Matters: A Memoir of a Female Heart Surgeon by Dr. Kathy Magliato '85 is the basis for a new show on NBC called “Heartbeat.” The program premieres March 23

To learn more about it, read a news story in The Hollywood Reporter. For more on Magliato, one of only a few female cardiothoracic surgeons in the world, visit her website.

During her time at Union, Magliato was an active student involved with Pre-Med Society, Women's Rugby Club and Newman Club. She also spent a term abroad in Italy.

Understanding PFOA, the chemical behind water crisis

Laura MacManus-Spencer, an associate professor of chemistry, was recently interviewed by WRGB-6, the CBS affiliate in Albany about the potential health effects of PFOA in Hoosick Falls, where high concentrations of the chemical were found in the village's public water supply.

Wishful thinking: When it comes to flirting with women, men fall Into two personality groups

A new study by Joshua Hart, associate professor of psychology and Rhea Howard ’14, now at Harvard University, suggests that a man’s attachment style - a personality trait reflecting his romantic relationship tendencies - may actually influence his perceptions of whether a woman is interested in him sexually.

The study will be published in the April issue of the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

The study was picked up by dozens of media outlets around the world.
