SEEN: Women@Work Connect event: Women in STEM

Women @ Work

Two faculty members were honored at a recent Women@Work event at MiSci in Schenectady.

The two were included in the March/April issue of Women@Work, a publication of the Times Union. The issue focuses on STEM education.

Rebecca Cortez, associate professor of mechanical engineering and director of undergraduate research, is among the 10 Capital Region women in science and technology sure to inspire.

Valerie Barr, professor of computer science and chair of ACM-W, the Association for Computing Machinery Council on Women in Computing, discussed gender disparity in the workforce.

The death of pop music icon Prince was the topic of discussion in a class taught by Jennifer Milioto Matsue, associate professor/director of interdisciplinary programs.

Open Forum: Climate change

WAMC

Donald Rodbell, professor of geology and chair of the department, was a recent guest on WAMC's program, Vox Pop.

Rodbell discussed climate change.

WAMC, Northeast Public Radio is a member of National Public Radio serving parts of seven northeastern states. These include New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

Alumni in the news: John Jablonski '83

John Jablonski '83 was recently featured in The Post-Star newspaper. The story focused on his new job as vice president for academic affairs at SUNY Adirondack Community College.

At Union, John was involved with Tau Beta Pi, Newman Club and Sigma Xi.

New York Times

The New York Times published an op-ed by Christopher Chabris and Josh Hart of the Psychology Department debunking the “Triple Package” formula espoused by Amy Chua (“Tiger Mom”) and Jed Rubenfeld on which traits predict success. The op-ed was one of the most emailed articles on the Times site.
