Civil Engineering

About the Civil Engineering major

(Not offered as a minor)

The Civil Engineering program at Union College combines technical training with the liberal arts to prepare global engineers for the 21st century. Civil engineers design and sustain critical elements of human life, including water, shelter, infrastructure, and energy, with a focus on sustainability. Our curriculum emphasizes the skills needed to build resilient, sustainable, and equitable cities.

Students engage in hands-on research using advanced instrumentation typically reserved for graduate programs, while gaining a strong foundation in engineering, mathematics and basic sciences. Key topics include infrastructure, water and air quality, pollution control, transportation, renewable and conventional energy, and construction management.

Carolyn Rodack, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, provides feedback to students constructing a small model during one of her introductory civil engineering classes.
