This major is only available to students who matriculate in Fall 2023 or later.
The Civil and Environmental Engineering curriculum will be introduced one year at a time as we hire faculty and build the new department. In 2023-2024, the first year curriculum will be offered. In 2024-2025, the first and second years of curriculum will be offered. In 2025-2026, the first three years of the curriculum will be offered. And, in 2026-2027, the full four years of the curriculum will be offered.
This means that current students entering the college before Fall 2023 will not be able to complete the program of either major in four years' time. The first class of matriculating students who will be able to complete either major in a standard four-year time frame will be the Class of 2027.
Please note that a minor in Environmental Engineering continues to be available to Union students.
The Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) programs focus on the application of engineering and science to address the needs of society. Civil and environmental engineers focus on creating and maintaining the essentials of human life including water, shelter, infrastructure and energy in increasingly more sustainable ways.
With an emphasis on hands-on undergraduate research using instrumentation typically found at the graduate level, students build a strong core in engineering fundamentals, mathematics and basic science. The curriculum covers such areas as infrastructure, water quality, air quality, pollution and contamination control, transportation and mass transit, energy (conventional and renewable), and construction materials.
Career possibilities are expansive. Given the tremendous flexibility of this field, graduates will find opportunities to work in a wide range of industries and settings in both the corporate and governmental sectors. All our students have access to all of the resources offered by the career center, including mock interviews, career fairs, internships, career counseling and alumni networking.
