A memoir by George Gmelch, professor of anthropology, was recently published by the University of Nebraska Press.

"Playing with Tigers: A Minor League Chronicle of the Sixties" recounts a baseball education unlike any other as he got to know small-town life across the United States against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, civil rights protests and the emergence of the counterculture.

Gmelch discussed his book on WAMC, Northeast Public Radio's program, The Roundtable.

Northeast Public Radio is a member of National Public Radio serving parts of seven northeastern states. These include New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

Fernando Orellana, associate professor of visual arts, was recently featured on WMHT's program, AHA! A House for Arts.

The program features the stories of artists, makers, and creative institutions both locally and nationally.

Bradley Hays, associate professor of political science, was a recent guest on "Congressional Corner" on WAMC, Northeast Public Radio. He discussed the controversy over Hillary Clinton's emails and the impact on the presidential election.

The College's new cogeneration plant was recently mentioned in a National Geographic story on how colleges are seeking to become energy independent.

The new plant will dramatically reduce the College’s carbon footprint, ease demand on current aging systems and result in significant energy saving costs.

The combined heat and power plant will allow for the simultaneous production of electricity to power most of Union’s 130-acre campus. The plant will also recycle waste heat to produce heat and chilled water that can be used to provide dehumidification year-round, a critical need in buildings like Schaffer Library and laboratories with sensitive equipment.

Union is partnering with Zipcar – the popular car sharing network – to offer a Ford Focus and a Ford Escape for use by students, faculty and staff.

Starting in the spring term, the Zipcars will have designated parking spaces in the West parking lot and be available to registered users 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
