Reformation authority speaking at Union College

Union has planned a number of events to mark the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, a 16th-century revolt that separated the Christians of western Europe into Catholics and Protestants.
On Thursday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m., Brad Gregory of the University of Notre Dame will deliver the annual Wold Lecture on Religion and Conflict in the Nott Memorial. His lecture is titled “Whether We Like it or Not: Why the Reformation Matters after 500 Years.”

Alumni in the news: Karen Ross '82

Karen Ross '82 was recently featured in The Huffington Post. The Q&A focused on her career and role as CEO of Sharp Decisions, one of the country’s largest, independent woman-owned technology solutions businesses.

She played soccer during her time at Union.

Marcus Hotaling, director of the Counseling Center, has been elected to the board of directors for the Association of University and College Counseling Center. The AUCCCD is the largest organization of campus mental health leaders in the world. The term is for one year. In his role, Hotaling will help guide campus mental health policy and initiatives at the national level. Hotaling joined Union in fall 2007.

An essay by Jillmarie Murphy, associate professor of English and director of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, was published in Victorian Ecocriticism: The Politics of Place and Early Environmental Justice. The piece is titled “The Politics of Place Attachment and the Laboring Body in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles." Read her essay here.

Alumni in the news: Vincent Bonventre '70

Vincent Bonventre '70 recently appeared on "Capital Tonight" to answer questions about the new U.S. Supreme Court term, which began Oct. 2. Bonventre is the Justice Robert H. Jackson Distinguished Professor of Law at Albany Law School.

He has also offered his expertise on "The Capitol Pressroom" and KJZZ-FM, NPR's Phoenix affiliate. At Union, he was a member of Sigma Chi and the men's swimming and diving team.

Union College exhibit examines Katrina's legacy

Artist Laini Nemett explores the concept of home through collaged architectural environments she creates from cardboard models and large-scale oil paintings in “When We Lived Here,” now at the Mandeville Gallery in the Nott Memorial.

The exhibition includes 32 works by Nemett, the John D. MacArthur Assistant Professor of Drawing and Painting at Union.

Alumni in the news: Bob Bernhardt '73

Bob Bernhardt '73 was recently featured in the Times Free Press. The story focused on a career milestone -- the start of his 25th year working with the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera.

At Union, he played baseball and soccer, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and student government, and was a resident advisor.

A forthcoming article by economics professors Lewis Davis and Steven Schmidt and Jack Mara ‘10, “Social Animal House: The Economic and Academic Consequences of Fraternity Membership,” has been covered by a number of national media outlets, including CNBC, Bloomberg View, Mother Jones, Market Watch, Yahoo Finance, and Real Clear Life. The working paper version of the article has over 45,000 views and 2,400 downloads. The article began as Mara’s senior thesis project.

Brad Hays, associate professor of political science, offered commentary on the controversy surrounding athletes protesting during the national anthem to WRGB, the local CBS affiliate. Watch that here.
