The Language Center

The Union College Language Center

Old Chapel, Room 310

The Language Center supports your specific language needs. Check our Language Assistants and Language Mentors‘ office hours for help with your assignments or simply to engage in great conversation. Walk-ins are available, however making an appointment is preferable (the link to the booking page for your language is shared by your professor or stop by the Language Center).

To support students who are studying Spanish, the Language Center offers a Conversation Partners Program where students meet one-on-one with heritage and native speakers of Spanish for the 200+ sequence to have conversations in the target language (professor email them the booking pages directly). This program is curricularly embedded in those courses.

For the 100+ sequence, we now have a Spanish Fellow who will conduct weekly "workshops" with the students to engage them further in the language and cultures of the Hispanic world.

We have Spanish Mentors who are available to meet one-one-one with students to support them in their language studies (practice speaking and writing, review materials, guide students to identify errors and self-correct etc.).

We also have events each term to highlight a language and cultural practice or product (events are announced on the Campus Events listserv). For example, last term we hosted Soil and Soul: Celebrando la Tierra (Celebrating Earth Day in Latin America).

The Spanish Language Table

The Spanish Language Table (MESA) is a weekly meeting held by the Spanish Club. In these meetings we practice and learn more about the Spanish language and Hispanic culture by having conversations, trying food from different Spanish speaking countries, and playing games. The Spanish Table is held once a week during Common Hour. Please contact us for specifics. Everyone is welcome to attend!

The Spanish Club

The Spanish Club promotes the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world through films, lectures, social gatherings, cooking classes, and the weekly “Spanish Table.” These co-curricular activities are excellent opportunities for students to interact with peers and faculty, and to learn about Hispanic cultures in a relaxed atmosphere. For more information, contact the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.
