General Education
Every Union student takes seven Perspectives courses from a range of eight disciplines.* Some of your Perspectives courses may coincide with your major or minor. And some may also fulfill our Writing Across the Curriculum requirements.
Each Perspectives course falls under an Area of Inquiry: either Global Challenges, or Justice, Equity, Identity, and Difference. These Areas connect Perspectives courses to one another and enable you to engage with the complex nature of global and social issues.
Global Challenges courses (marked G) focus on global societal issues. Students address the historical origins of these issues, question their assumptions, and confront the complexities of an uncertain world.
Justice, Equity, Identity and Difference courses (marked J) focus on social, political, and economic relations between identity groups. Students examine how their personal experiences shape their perceptions of society and their place in it, and explore how larger social systems intersect and influence identities.
There are many paths to completing the Perspectives requirements. No matter which courses you choose, you will develop an understanding of the dynamics that shape our world.
*The Class of 2027 is only required to take 6 Perspectives.
