Research interests

His teaching and research interests are in the areas of Chinese language and literature, Chinese film, and cultural studies. Connecting literary studies with the history of subjectivity, his current research explores the distinctive manifestation of human agency in consumer culture, and contemporary China’s complex negotiations with socialist legacy and globalization.

Teaching interests

He teaches all levels of Chinese courses that synthesize linguistic competency, cultural understanding, and critical thinking. He also regularly offers MLT courses that have included Modern Chinese Literature, Chinese Cinema, Person and Possession in Modern China, Literary Traditions in East Asia, Perspectives in Modern East Asian Literature.
