Executive Chef Will Roy will host a cooking class, “From Farm to Table,” on April 20 at Spoon and Whisk cooking store in Clifton Park. Roy will share his love of locally-produced ingredients and prepare a meal featuring local fruits and vegetables.
Lara Atkins, director of International Programs, recently attended the seventh annual conference of the Forum on Education Abroad, held in Boston. The conference, “Making the Connection: Praxis and Theory in Education Abroad,” focused on the link between education abroad practices and the theories on which they are based. The forum is a non-profit association recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission as the Standards Development Organization for the field of education abroad.
Stacie Raucci, assistant professor of classics, was awarded a Stevens Traveling Fellowship through her alma mater, Wellesley College. The fellowship will support Raucci’s travel through Rome this summer. The professor plans to develop a sourcebook about Rome for undergraduates to be edited with social historian Fanny Dolansky. The book will serve as a resource for anyone interested in Rome and urban studies.
Valerie Barr, the computer science chair, recently attended the New York Women in Computing Conference in Albany. Rachel Hogue ’11, Erin Horgan ’12, Camila Dorin '11, Julia Duros '13 and Kristen Cusano '14 also attended the conference. Hogue and Horgan both gave presentations. At the conference, participants shared research, utilized networking opportunities and discussed issues facing women in computing.
The College recently hosted a Russian “Olympiada,” the 10th annual competition for college students from across New York state. Union’s team included Kathryn Burns ‘13, Ayon Ibrahim ‘13, Alexander Frye ’14, Jeramey Normand ’14 and Erin Waterman ’14. The competition tested students’ reading, speaking, grammar and poetry recitation skills. Ibrahim took second place in the intermediate category.
Students from the University at Albany, Hamilton College, Binghamton University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges and the United State Military Academy at West Point competed.
