Kenneth G. DeBono, the Gilbert R. Livingston Professor of Behavioral Sciences, published an article in the Journal of Social Influence. “On the Effects of Product Name on Product Evaluation: An Individual Difference Perspective” was based on the senior thesis of his co-author, Katie Smidt '10. The research demonstrated that a product’s name can have a significant influence on people’s perceptions of that product’s quality.

Katherine Lynes, assistant professor of English, recently attended a seminar at the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment conference in Bloomington, Ind. She presented her paper “Teaching Black Nature: Resistance and Revision.” She also presented a paper, “A Responsibility to Something Besides People: Black American Ecopoetics,” at the Literature and Environmental Conservation Responsibilities Conference at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, earlier this month.

A study by Cay Anderson-Hanley, assistant professor of psychology, was published in Psychology Research and Behavior Management. The paper, titled “Autism and Exergaming: Effects on Repetitive Behaviors and Cognition,” was co-authored with Kimberly Tureck '10 and Robyn L. Schneiderman '09. The study showed that repetitive behaviors in autistic children were significantly decreased after playing exercise video games such as “Dance Dance Revolution” and cyber cycling.

Matthew Manning '12 was featured on with other college students who interned at IBM Zurich over the summer. Manning talked about his work in the Nanofabrication Lab. “My stay in Zurich at the IBM lab truly proved to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he told the site. “Not only did I learn new things and gain valuable skills that I will bring back to my home university, but I did so while being immersed in a completely different culture. I would call this internship a perfect combination of education and adventure.”

Union topped University of Houston and Concordia College for "Most Creative Use of Cascade Server" at the Cassie Awards held at the annual Cascade conference hosted by Hannon Hill, an Atlanta-based maker of online publishing solutions for higher education and other industries. An innovative method for publishing social media onto the Union College website was among the projects receiving the most votes in a poll open to all Hannon Hill clients. Erik España, associate web director in the Office of Communications, was the lead developer of the project.
