An essay by Chad Orzel, associate professor and chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department, was published in “The Best Science Writing Online 2012.” The essay, “Faster than a Speeding Photon,” provides a detailed explanation of the claimed measurement of neutrinos moving faster than the speed of light, clarifying the article in terms to a non-physicist.
The research of David Cotter, professor and chair of the Sociology Department, on the stalled gender revolution was highlighted in a Sunday New York Times Review essay by historian Stephanie Coontz. The article sought to debunk recent books asserting women's outpacing men. Some of the graphics in the article were generated from his recent paper on the stalling of occupational desegregation. Also, Cotter's article on the slowing of trends in gender attitudes was noted in economist Nancy Folbre's New York Times blog post "Patriarchal Norms Still Shape Family Care."
John Garver, professor of geology, is serving on the Mohawk River Basin Steering Committee, a group formed by the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation. The committee is studying the river and ways to mitigate flooding. Garver’s participation in the project was highlighted in a recent article in the Times Union.
A book by George Gmelch, professor of anthropology, and Sharon Gmelch, "Tasting the Good Life: Wine Tourism in the Napa Valley," won the French Gourmand Prize for Best American Book on Wine Tourism. The book was published by Indiana University Press in 2011.
