Union has received a record 5,643 applications from prospective first-year students vying to join the Class of 2017.

The students who applied for 570 slots represent a slight increase from a year ago, the most competitive year in the College's admissions history. This marks the fourth time that applications to Union have topped 5,000.

More than a quarter of the incoming class is already enrolled through the first round of Early Decision admission. Early Decision applications are considered twice a year. Students applying under Early Decision have made a commitment to attend Union if they are accepted.

"This large pool of applicants will allow Union to be highly selective in our deliberations for the incoming members of the class during our Regular Decision process," said Matt Malatesta ’91, vice president for Admissions, Financial Aid and Enrollment.

The increase in applications continues a decade-long trend of prospective students hoping to join Union. Applications to the College have risen 17 percent in the last four years and 35 percent since 2003.

The uptick also comes at a time when more families are seeking financial aid. Union is committed to meeting the full financial need of all admitted students. The average need-based scholarship at Union is $29,000, and the average merit scholarship is $10,000.

In addition to top faculty and programs, Malatesta cited a number of additions to Union's historic campus that have enticed prospective students.

The Peter Irving Wold Center, a $22 million, three-story, 35,000-square-foot research and education facility, opened in 2011.

In the spring, construction is expected to be completed for the Henle Dance Pavilion, a home for classes, rehearsals, workshops, performances and other events. The $3 million, 7,000-square-foot facility is adjacent to Yulman Theater overlooking Jackson’s Garden.

And this fall, the Wicker Wellness Center is scheduled to open. The two-story, 6,600-square foot building will allow Health Services and the Counseling Center to relocate from Silliman Hall.

Regular decision letters will be sent by April 1. Accepted students have until May 1 to commit.
