Pianist Jeremy Denk returns to Memorial Chapel for the

Denk

Union College Concert Series on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m.

Denk offers a program spanning 200 years of piano literature. The first half begins with Bartók’s rarely-heard Piano Sonata followed by a set of works by Liszt – the Prelude on Bach’s “Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen,” a Petrarch Sonnet (No. 123), the Dante Sonata, and a transcription of Wagner’s “Isolde’s Liebestod.” On the second half, Denk begins with Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B Minor, BWV 869 and ends with Beethoven’s last piano sonata – the Sonata in C Minor, Op. 111.

He will perform the same program at Carnegie Hall after his appearance at Union. Renowned for his insightful and impassioned interpretations, he is making his fifth recital appearance with the series and often performs in Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and New York.

He made his debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall during the 2010-2011 season and one month later, was asked to substitute for an ill Mauricio Pollini at Carnegie Hall. He is also frequently a soloist with many major orchestras including the Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, St. Louis and San Francisco symphonies, the Philadelphia and Philharmonia (London) orchestras, and he has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra in London, Paris and New York.

Denk is highly regarded for his music blog, “Think Denk,” which is frequently referenced by many in the music industry and press. He also contributed a well-regarded article this year in The New Yorker about his experiences with the music of Charles Ives.

Tickets are free to the campus community. Individual tickets for the general public are $25 or $10 for students. Subscription packages offer significant savings. For information, call (518) 388-6080 or visit http://www.unioncollegeconcerts.org.
