Professor Carol Weisse, director of Health Professions, is this week’s Kenney Community Center Volunteer of the Week.
For more than 10 years, Weisse has been a hospice volunteer and currently, she serves as a board member for the Joan Nicole Prince Home, a comfort care home for terminally ill patients in their final days. In addition to coordinating a variety of service opportunities for students, Weisse is most passionate about volunteering with end-of-life care programs. She has organized independent study abroad opportunities at hospices in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
“Working with the dying is a transformative experience, as it fosters reflection on one’s purpose and the meaning of life,” she said. “Joining students in this journey as they grow personally and professionally while caring for people at such an important time in their lives has been a deep honor and privilege. It’s probably the most meaningful work I have done in my 25 year career at Union."
A professor of courses in cognitive neuroscience, health psychology, art and medicine, and death and dying, Weisse is also developing a new course on humanism in medicine.
