Robert Lippman '50 returns to Union for talk at the Nott

Publication Date

Robert G. Lippman ’50 will return to Union Monday, May 20 and deliver a talk at the Nott Memorial at 5 p.m.

Lippman’s talk, “A Union Man at War,” is open to the public.

In 1941, he began his collegiate career at Colgate University on a hockey scholarship, but left to join the Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in Burma during World War II as part of the 51st flight control squadron with the famous Merrill's Marauders, and is the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge and two Bronze Stars. When Robert returned from the war in 1945, he chose to continue his education at Union at the urging of his uncle, Morris M. Cohn '20. While here, he was a member of Phi Sigma Delta, the Interfraternity Council and the Student Council.

Post-Union, he pioneered the use of sports licensing as a major marketing tool. At one point he controlled seven licenses—NFL, NBA, MLB, USTA, NHL, National Hot Rod Association, and Harlem Globetrotters—all while further developing major college teams as a marketing program. Robert also worked at Cove Point Realty in Oyster Bay, N.Y., which was founded by his wife, Barbara. Though now retired from his position as director of marketing at Campus Sportswear, Robert founded several innovative marketing programs that are still in effect today.

The talk is sponsored by the History Department and President’s Office.
