Economist Andrew Zimbalist, one of the leading authorities on the political economy of sport, will speak Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 6:45 p.m. in the Nott Memorial.
His talk, “The Olympics and the World Cup: Who Wins? Who Loses? The Political Economy of Hosting Sport Mega Events,” is part of the Minerva Lecture Series. It is free and open to the public.
Zimbalist, a professor of economics at Smith College, is the author of 21 books. Among them is Equal Play: Title IX and Social Change(with Nancy Hogshead-Maker); In The Best Interests of Baseball: The Revolutionary Reign of Bud Selig; and Unpaid Professionals: Commercialization and Conflict in Big-Time College Sports.
He has also been a consultant to major league sports teams and players associations.
Before the lecture, Zimbalist will speak at Breazzano House from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on “Vexing Issues in the Economics of Sports.”Zimbalist’s visit is sponsored by the programs of Athletics, Asian, WGS, LACS, Interdisciplinary and Core Curriculum; and the departments of Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science and Sociology.
