Why Union:
My dad (Kenneth Zimmerman ’78) often said his time here was the best four years of his life. In 2008, when I visited campus for his 30-year ReUnion, I got to experience Union – the Nott Memorial, the Minerva Houses, Jackson's Garden – through the eyes of an aspiring student. It was all more remarkable than I had imagined. Two years later, I spent the 2010 Homecoming weekend with my sister, Cara, then a first-year. She beamed as she introduced me to her roommates and new cross-country friends. I could already see myself in her shoes.
Most inspiring class:
My Sophomore Research Seminar, "Socialisms," with Professor Teresa Meade. By the end of the course, not only had I learned interesting information about a completely new topic, but I also learned how to manage my time, use my available resources effectively, and put together a cohesive presentation and research paper. This class shaped me as a student.
Also excited about:
Going on the China mini-term in Tianjin. It perfectly combines my academic and career interests, giving me the extraordinary opportunity to study Traditional Chinese Medicine at China’s oldest medical college. Along with learning practices such as acupuncture and massage therapy, we will look at Chinese health care policies and management in comparison to the U.S. health care system.

Favorite study spots:
In nice weather, you can usually find me scattered somewhere in Jackson’s Gardens or on the benches in front of the library. Otherwise, I like sitting at the first floor tables or third floor cubicles of the library.
Three things I’m passionate about at Union:
- My legacy. I feel very connected to the school because I have my wonderful sister here with me and because my father had the chance to experience Union.
- My volunteer work. At the Joan Nicole Prince Home, I am learning about the importance of end-of-life care and decisions. I also love spending time with my "little Brother" every other weekend.
- My studies. I have picked an academic path that allows me to say I enjoy all my classes.
Most surprising thing about Union:
How connected and passionate the professors are. It’s extremely easy to establish relationships with them, and they are available to help more frequently than I would have imagined. Professors also are immersed in campus life, whether it’s at a hockey game or a Minerva talk.
How I’m making Union a better place:
I believe I have contributed to Union’s sense of community and connectedness by being active in various clubs, continuing my legacy and volunteering.
Looking into the future:
I plan to take the MCAT spring of my junior year and attend medical school the following fall, if everything goes according to plan. This is something I have wanted since I was a young girl.
Advice for incoming students:
Don't be nervous – everyone's in the same boat, and people tend to be extremely friendly. Do be adventurous. Try something new, either a class that intrigues you or a club. Pursue your hidden interests.
