Memorial Fieldhouse floor renovations complete

Renovations to floor of Memorial Fieldhouse began after Labor Day, and the new floor was ready for use in Dec. after many improvements.

The new basketball court flooring is more firm, and safer, than its predecessor and is expected to last many years, said Adam Brinker, Assistant Director of Athletic Facilities.

The track had the most work done to it, and its texture was improved to a much higher standard so that it may better suit running and jumping events. “We have had several high school indoor track meets, and after a breaking-in period, the new floor has earned rave reviews from coaches and administrators,” said Brinker.

Constructed in 1955 as a tribute to America's war veterans, Memorial Fieldhouse's dirt floor was covered in the early 1970s with a Tartan surface, allowing the men's basketball team to move from Alumni Gym. Basketball games were moved to the Viniar Athletic Center in 2005 after that building's construction.
