The Artemis Quartet makes its highly-anticipated return to Memorial Chapel as part of the Union College Concert Series Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 8 p.m.
The series welcomes back this renowned German ensemble, which is generally considered one of the leading quartets in the world today. The Artemis Quartet offers a program of two masterworks of the 19th century: Brahms’s Quartet No. 3 in B-flat Major, Op. 67 and Quartet No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 51, No. 1, bookending a masterwork of the 20th century: György Kurtág’s Officium breve in memoriam Andreae Szervánszky, Op. 28. This is their first appearance on the series since 2006.
Founded in 1989, the Artemis Quartet makes annual appearances at Carnegie Hall and other major venues around the world. The quartet has programmed its own critically-acclaimed series at the famed Berlin Philharmonie and has a residency at Vienna’s Konzerthaus. In recognition of its recording of the three great Schubert quartets in 2012, the Salle Pleyel in Paris invited them to program its own series of Schubert with many guest artists this season. The Artemis Quartet has had an exclusive recording contract with Virgin Classics/EMI, resulting in a vast catalogue and many prestigious honors including a Diapason d’Or, Gramophone Award, and an ECHO-Klassik award. Regularly collaborating with today’s leading artists, the quartet has recorded with pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, cellist Truls Mørk, and other luminaries.
