The leading Brentano String Quartet returns to Memorial Chapel to close the Union College Concert Series on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The Brentano String Quartet – newly-appointed quartet-in-residence of Yale University – closes our season with a program of works spanning 250 years. They begin with Haydn’s charming Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 64, No. 3and follow with a new work by Steven Mackey inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy Assassination called One Red Rose (in reference to a blood-soaked rose retrieved from the floor of the presidential limousine). After intermission, the quartet plays Beethoven’s celebrated Quartet in E Minor, Op. 59, No. 2 “Razumovsky.”
The Brentano String Quartet is now in its 22nd season and has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. Making annual appearances at Carnegie Hall, the quartet garnered the first Cleveland Quartet Award and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award; and in 1996 the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center invited them to be the inaugural members of Chamber Music Society Two.
The Brentano Quartet now serves as the collaborative ensemble for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, succeeding the Takács Quartet. The quartet also enjoys an especially close relationship with pianist Mitsuko Uchida, appearing with her on stages in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Their most recent recording – the first of three recordings featuring the late Beethoven Quartets – was released on Aeon.
