Loose Change Dance Collective, founded by Union dance faculty member Laurie Zabele Cawley, joins with (Alex)andra Taylor Dance, a New York City-based company, to present Tides of Magnets, an evening of original and restaged modern dance in the Henle Dance Pavilion, Saturday at 7:30 pm.
The program, which runs approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes with no intermission, is free and open to the public.
Loose Change will showcase four pieces that focus on various aspects of women’s relationships. Three are by Cawley: Her Life Waltz, Penumbra and Invitation. Whitley Setrakian, a choreographer from Ann Arbor, Mich., presents Desperate, Lovely, set to music by Etta James.
From (Alex)andra Taylor Dance comes 5+1, a quintet; and the duet, What Was, Never Existed.
Loose Change Dance Collective was created last year to showcase local dancers of various experiences, body lines and ages.
Says Cawley, “The group challenges the bias of what a dancer is and should look like, emphasizes the dancer’s vitality and artistry, and exposes us to the concept that as we age, we tend to become invisible and marginalized.”
Taylor’s company, founded in 2010, thrives on collaborative dance-making methods. It aims to bring its audiences relatable art through storytelling by powerful artists. A student of Cawley more than a decade ago, Taylor is reuniting with her former teacher for the Henle dance concert.
