Union plans a slate of events for Black History Month

The College has a variety of events to observe Black History Month, which starts on Feb. 1. They are:

Monday, Feb. 2 - Film and Discussion event: “Dear White People”

Where: Beuth Great Room

Time: 5:15pm * Pizza, drinks and popcorn will be provided

Host: Black Student Union (BSU)

Thursday, Feb. 5 - Identity Dialogues: Contemporary Black Identity

Where: Unity Lounge Reamer 305

Time: Common Lunch

Host: Multicultural Affairs and ID planning team

Thursday Feb. 5 - Movie, Dinner and Discussion: “Selma”

Time: (TBD) *Transportation, tickets and dinner provided

Friday, Feb. 6 – “The Intersections of Leadership, Identity and Diversity” with Rob Kelly, Chief of Staff

Wednesday, Feb. 11 - Pizza and Politics: “The State of Hip Hop” with Jermaine Wells

Where: Lippman 016

Wednesday, Feb. 11 – “Black History from a Hip Hop Perspective”

Ill Funk Ensemble will be doing a set, Jermaine Wells will speak briefly on hip-hop history and U-Break will perform.

Thursday, Feb. 12 - Dancing in the Streets, The Motown Story with Donald “The Soul Man” Hyman

Where: Reamer Auditorium

Monday, Feb. 16 - Civil Rights Talk by Prof. Melinda Lawson

Where: Sorum Great Room

Time: 5pm *Pizza and drinks will be served

Thursday, Feb. 19 - Film and discussion “American Denial” with WMHT Community Cinema

Where: Reamer Auditorium

Time: 6:30 *Refreshments will be served

Thursday, Feb. 26 - Black is Beautiful Coffee shop with BSU and the African and Latino Alliance of Students (ALAS) (Co-sponsored)

Where: Golub Great Room

Time: 7:30pm * Coffee, tea + Light refreshments

Thursday, March 5 - Featured speaker: Peter Haviland Eduah '10, National Policy Director for Million Hoodies

Where: Karp 105

Time: Common Hour (a possible evening program TBD)

Hosts: Departments of History, Africana Studies, Political Science, Sociology and American Studies; Multicultural Affairs; BSU and ALAS

Also, Dining Services will be offering food options to compliment the theme of the month, and Schaffer library will be installing a “flash exhibit” in the main library to coincide with BHM.
