To mark 150th anniversary of Civil War surrender, the College placed flowers at the grave of Brevet Maj. Charles E. Pease., a member of the Class of 1856.
On April 9, 1865, as a member of the 44th New York Infantry during the Civil War, Pease carried the terms of surrender drafted by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, which led to the formal meeting between the two at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia.
