In collaboration with October’s LGBTQ History Month and National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11), a reception was held at the Nott Memorial Wednesday evening, highlighting the art work of students, faculty and alumni.
Now in its seventh year, the LGBTQ at Union exhibit at the Wikoff Student Gallery helps bring awareness, promote discussion and educate the campus about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community.
Pieces from a variety of mediums, including painting, photography, digital art and film, are on display until Dec. 14.
Artists sharing their perspective include Cassandra Padilla ’17, who won Best in Show; Yuan Gao ’18, who was awarded Second Place; Danielle Melia ’16, Maya Whalen-Kipp ’16, Alex Handin ’10, Ran Wang ’15 and Martin Benjamin, professor of Visual Arts.
"I’m thrilled to continue a tradition begun at Union in 2008,” said Sarah Mottalini, Curatorial Assistant of Art Collections and Exhibitions. “"The importance of bringing awareness to the campus is not only paramount to the mission of the exhibition, but also very apparent in the artists’ faces. Clearly, LGBTQ and Ally voices want to be heard, and the investment of the artists is matched by our hope to share their stories with the Union community.”
The exhibit, on the third floor of the Nott, is co-sponsored by the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, Schaffer Library and the Department of Visual Arts.
