Garrett Fitzgerald '18 and Rebecca Koopmann ’89, professor and chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department, recently observed at the WIYN 0.9m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Ariz. They targeted galaxies in intermediate-density groups to measure their star formation and explore how the environment of a group could affect the evolution of member galaxies. Fitzgerald is also one of four finalists in a national contest with Xploration Station. He was nominated for creating a video about the importance of space exploration. The College’s chapter of the Society of Physics Students was awarded a Distinguished Chapter award for the 2014-2015 academic year. The selection is based on assessment of the depth and breadth of SPS activities conducted by the chapter to build community and propel students into their careers as prepared professionals. Chapter officers were: president Steven DiIorio '15, vice president Harrisonn Griffin '16, secretary Shauna LeFebvre '16, treasurer Andrew McCalmont '16 and Harry Hausner '16, national correspondent.
Joseph Johnson, director of Writing Programs, presented a paper, “Emerson, Rhetoric and the Idea of the Liberal Arts,” as part of a panel organized by the Ralph Waldo Emerson Society at the American Literature Association’s Annual Conference in San Francisco.
David Ogawa, associate professor of art history, presented a talk, “Evidence and Identity in the Register BB3,” at a conference for the European Society for 19th Century Art in Amsterdam. The conference was titled “City of Sin: Representing the Urban Underbelly in the 19th Century.”
The Union College Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Tim Olsen, associate professor of music, will perform at the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival on Thursday, June 9 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Church Street Marketplace. In tandem with the international artists who perform on the main stages, the Jazz on the Marketplace series presents student bands from throughout Vermont and the Northeast.
