Mayor’s Cup game a chance to show off academic prowess, too

When the Union’s men’s hockey team faces off against RPI in the fifth annual Mayor’s Cup Thursday night at the Times Union Center in Albany, once again there will be a side competition: robo-hockey.

Between the first and second periods, teams representing the schools, both of which have prominent engineering programs will show off their academic prowess. Students will maneuver three modified cars designed to push a puck around the rink. The first team to get its puck around the course and into the far net wins.

Representing Union are Adam Beneroff ’18 and Joshua Park ‘18.

Representing Union’s Baja Club are Benjamin Davis ‘17, Colin Kelly ‘20, Mark Solomon ‘20, Sam Veith ‘20, Allison King ‘19 and Peter Keane ‘20.

Students showcasing their 10-foot wing span plane include Brendan Cheevers ‘17, Kathleen Matthews ‘17, Benjamin Schwartz ‘17, Catherine Kanama ‘17, Nathan Billings ‘17 and Sam Kupiec ‘19.

John Costa ‘17 will represent Rocketry Club.

Jeremy Vanderover, visiting assistant professor of mechanical engineering, will accompany the team.

“We hope to inspire pre-college students to consider engineering as a career,” said Ronald Bucinell, associate professor of mechanical engineering.
