Violinist Jennifer Koh and pianist Shai Wosner perform on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. in Memorial Chapel.
Renowned for her innovative programming, the Korean-American violinist and her recital partner offer a program entitled Bridge to Beethoven. Koh commissioned American composer and Pulitzer prize-winner Andrew Norman to write three new works (Bridging I, II, and III) to be played between the three Beethoven Op. 30 violin sonatas (No. 1 in A Major, No. 2 in C Minor, and No. 3 in G Major).
Born in Chicago of Korean parents, Koh is Musical America’s 2016 Instrumentalist of the Year, a winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition, and a recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant. Ms. Koh has been heard with leading orchestras around the world including the Los Angeles and New York philharmonics; the Atlanta Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, BBC Symphony Chicago Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, among others. Last season, Ms. Koh performed a broad range of concertos, including concertos by Steven Mackey, Mozart, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Sibelius.
Wosner is a recipient of Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. As a concerto soloist in the U.S., Mr. Wosner has appeared with the orchestras of Atlanta, Baltimore, Berkeley, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles. Born in Israel, Mr. Wosner enjoyed a broad musical education from a very early age, studying piano as well as composition, theory, and improvisation. He later studied at The Juilliard School with Emanuel Ax. Mr. Wosner is on the faculty at the Longy School of Music in Boston.
