Michele Angrist, professor of political science, will serve as the College’s new Dean of Studies, effective Jan. 1, 2019. Therese McCarty, the John Prior Lewis ’41 Professor of Economics, will serve as interim dean from Sept. 1 through the end of the year.

Politics with Beauvoir, authored by Lori Marso, Doris Zemurray Stone Professor of Literary and Historical Studies and professor of Political Science, was featured at the daylong Feminist Theory Pre-Conference of the Western Political Science Association Meeting in San Francisco last week. Every year, a notable book in feminist theory is chosen by a committee. Participants read the book in advance and gather for discussion of its significance.

A new book by Megan Ferry, associate professor of Chinese and Asian Studies, was featured at the Association for Asian Studies annual conference. “Chinese Women Writers and Modern Print Culture” analyzes the gendered spaces that modern Chinese publishers, editors, critics and more created for the work of female authors.

Fifteen faculty, staff and students presented research at the Northeastern Geological Society of America in Burlington, Vt. Kurt Hollocher, the John and Jane Wold Professor of Geology, and Andres Gallego ‘18 gave talks about their research. Hannah Barnes ‘18, Alaina Chormann ‘20, Jordy Herbert ‘18, Sarah Hickernell ‘18, Tshering Lama Sherpa ‘18, Abadie Ludlam ‘18, Heidi O’Hora ‘19, Maria Van Nostrand ‘18, Katherine Treacy ‘18 and Joe Ammirato ‘18 presented posters. Geology technical staff Sarah Katz also presented a poster. Matt Manon, lecturer, and David Gillikin, associate professor, co-authored several posters and attended the meeting.

A paper by Lewis Davis, professor of economics, and Megan Reynolds ’16 has been accepted for publishing by Economics Letters. “Gendered Language and the Educational Gender Gap” found that speaking a language with sex-based noun classes, such as Spanish or Italian, is associated with a 0.75 year decrease in female educational attainment relative to otherwise similar men. The paper began as Reynolds' senior thesis.

Mark Dallas, associate professor of political science, was quoted in a recent story in The Post Star on Rep. Elise Stefanik. Dallas discussed the importance of constituents’ attendance at town hall meetings and how they can shape public opinion.
