Kimmo Rosenthal, professor of mathematics, will have an essay, “Tranquility Shot Through with Sorrow,” appear in The Ekphrastic Review. The essay is about Edward Hopper's painting Early Sunday Morning. He will also have his earlier ekphrastic essay, “Mon Ami Pierrot,” appear in Accidents of Light, KYSO Flash Anthology, Vol. 5, a print anthology of the best work to appear in the journal in 2018. The essay is about the painting Pierrot by Jean-Antoine Watteau.
Samuel Amanuel, associate professor of physics and astronomy, participated in the 2019 American Physical Society medal ceremony and leadership convocation in Washington, D.C. He has been serving on the executive committee of the New York state section of APS since 2015.
A piece by Hilary Tann, the John Howard Payne Professor of Music and chair of the Music Department, will have its U.S. premiere Feb. 17 as part of the North/South Consonance series of concerts in New York. Written for string orchestra, baritone, and soprano, the piece uses texts by Gwyneth Lewis, the former poet laureate of Wales. The work was commissioned by the Beaumaris Festival in 2018. Tann has recently completed a work for solo violin and piano for the “Beethoven in Wales” project in which three composers were asked to respond to some aspect of the Beethoven violin sonatas (https://www.rhylmusic.com/beethoven-in-wales/). Her work is called "First Light: A Meditation on Beethoven Op. 96:I" and will be premiered March 20 in Rhyl, Wales, by pianist Richard Ormrod and violinist Mary Hofman.
