George Bizer, the Gilbert R. Livingston Professor of the Behavioral Sciences, and Therese McCarty, the John Prior Lewis ‘41 Professor Emerita of Economics, have published an article in Journal of Veterans Studies, entitled “Learning Mindset and the Academic Achievement of Student Service Members/Veterans.” The article is co-authored by E. Michael Bohlig of the Center for Community College Student Engagement (retired). The authors explore the extent to which a learning mindset—a student’s sense of belonging, confidence in their ability to be successful, perception that coursework is relevant to future success, and belief that the ability to learn can grow—might also predict academic outcomes, comparing veterans and military students with civilians.

Yifei Guan, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, recently published a paper, "Application of the ghost fluid lattice Boltzmann method to injection-induced electroconvection in a dielectric liquid" in Applied Mathematical Modelling. The paper is about developing a ghost fluid-lattice Boltzmann method(GF-LBM) to simulate electroconvection problems with complex boundaries. It proposes a new numerical method for simulating fluid flow in complex geometries. The study has potential applications to thermal engineering and multiphysical fluid dynamics.

Osamu Miyawaki, assistant professor of geosciences, co-authored an article in Geophysical Research Letters. The article, "Moist Adiabatic Scaling Explains Mean and Fast Upper-Level Jet Stream Wind Response to Climate Change," explains why the jet stream is strengthening in a warming world using simple moist thermodynamics.

Jordan Smith, the Edward Everett Hale Jr. Professor of English, was recently published on Live Encounters. The essay, "Liberty," was written after one of the Minerva House Jams with guest writer Tom Piazza, who had just completed a three-day residency in the Department of English, and multi-instrumentalist George Wilson, a master of the New England Fiddle style.

Mason Stahl, the James M. Kenney Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering, and Beck DeYoung '21 co-authored a paper, "Surface Variable-Based Machine Learning for Scalable Arsenic Prediction in Undersampled Areas," recently published in the American Geophysical Union journal GeoHealth.

Bunkong Tuon, professor of English, recently published poems in Salamander Magazine, One Art, and Collateral Journal. He also participated in a community reading during Art Night Schenectady at Armory Studios.
