Miyah Falk is the student speaker at Commencement on Sunday, June 14. She auditioned for the honor and was chosen by a student committee.
Hometown: Washington, D.C
Major: Political science and English
Activities: Member of Sigma Delta Tau and Alpha Phi Omega; Senior Admissions intern; Kenney Center volunteer liaison; Co-chair of Senior Gift Committee; Orientation Leader; UVOTE; and Chabad
Favorite class: You can never go wrong with taking a class with Jordan Smith, the Edward Everett Hale Jr., Professor of English, Claire Bracken, professor of English or Zoe Oxley, William D. Williams Professor of Political Science. Since I cannot pick just one favorite, here is my top class from each: “Senior Seminar: Advanced Poetry Workshop,” “James Joyce” and “Women and Politics.”
What I will miss most: The feeling of being surrounded by people who were constantly learning, questioning, creating and growing together. I will miss the everyday interactions that slowly turned into lifelong memories, as well as the professors who pushed me to think deeper, speak more confidently and see possibilities in myself that I had not noticed before.
Advice for incoming students: College is less about having everything figured out and more about learning how to adapt. Go to class, ask questions, try new things and do not be afraid to start over socially or academically if something is not working. Most importantly, be kind to people and to yourself.
Life after Union: I will be attending The Trachtenberg School at George Washington University, where I will pursue my master’s in Public Administration, with a concentration in Nonprofit Management.
