Youth STEM Enrichment

STEM Enrichment

There are a variety of great ways to support Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) programs for youth in our community. You do not have to major in one of these areas to be a part of the efforts to increase engagement in schools, afterschool programs, and community centers. Opportunities include one-time events or regularly-scheduled repeating sessions.

Pen Pal Program

Pen Pal in person visit 2025

The Pen Pal Program pairs Union students with a 5th grade student from Zoller Elementary School in Schenectady. The pairs write a letter to each other once a week, building a foundation of companionship and trust. At the end of the school year, the Zoller students come to Union to meet their pen pal and spend a fun-filled afternoon with them!

Union STEP Tutoring

The Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP) serves eligible students in grades 7-12 through STEM education. Union College students have the opportunity to tutor STEP students in a variety of subjects. This is a great opportunity to gain mentorship and tutoring experience.

This opportunity requires at least 1 hour per week. Weekly schedules are created based on the common availability of the Union student and STEP student. Sessions can take place on campus in Schaffer Library, or over Zoom.

Discovery Academy

Discovery Academy is a program run by Liberty ARC, a non-profit organization supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program takes place at Union College and provides a college experience for young adults with developmental disabilities. Students, clubs, and organizations at the College collaborate with Discovery Academy through various activities, including socialization, shared meals, and participation in campus events.
