Music Technology

Why study music technology?

Studying music technology bridges the artistic and technical realms of music making while empowering students to harness the tools and techniques that define the modern music landscape. In an era where technology permeates every facet of our lives, from how we listen to music to how it is created and shared, understanding music technology opens the door to a world of creativity and innovation. Through direct experience working with digital audio workstations, analog and digital sound systems, MIDI controllers, and synthesizers, students develop proficiency in audio engineering, MIDI sequencing, sound synthesis, and more. Whether you are a budding composer, producer, performer, or a music enthusiast, studying music technology will equip you with essential skills and knowledge to navigate today's digital music landscape.

Music Technology at Union

The Music Technology Minor at Union College is an interdisciplinary program consisting of six courses that highlight the connections between the fields of music and engineering, as well as computer science and digital arts. From learning to record, mix, and compose your own music to building an audio amplifier and working with microcontrollers, our curriculum blends hands-on training with theoretical knowledge. The music technology courses are open to all students and assume no prior musical background or knowledge of music or music theory. The range of qualifying electives enables students to build a minor that suits their interests. Its flexibility makes the most of Union’s liberal arts core and helps students discover connections across different fields of study and to experience first-hand the complementary nature of the liberal arts, engineering, and computer science mindsets. Beyond honing artistic and technical proficiency, the Music Technology Minor cultivates collaboration, sparks creativity, and fosters a deeper comprehension of the relationship between music, engineering, computer science, and technology.
