Valerie Barr, professor of computer science and chair of ACM-W, the Association for Computing Machinery Council on Women in Computing, recently spoke at "A Call to Action for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment" conference at UN Headquarters in New York.

Dozens of media outlets nationally and internationally reported on the conference, including the Toronto Telegraph, Malaysia Sun and the Paris Guardian.

Taylor Music Center continues its Taylor Time! concert series with a recital of original works and other pieces by Max Caplan ’16 at 5 p.m. Monday, May 23, in Emerson Auditorium.

A composer and pianist, Caplan will perform four original compositions, including his newest piece, “Metamorphoses,” a quartet for violin, clarinet, cello and piano, with prominent professional musicians selected by Hilary Tann, the John Howard Payne Professor of Music. He will also perform a solo piece for piano, a piano duet and a piece scored for a large jazz ensemble.

A new exhibit, "Grassroots Activism and the American Wilderness: Pioneers in the 20th Century Adirondack Park Conservation Movement," features selected material from the John S. Apperson and Paul Schaefer collections held at the Kelly Adirondack Center. The exhibit will be on display in the Lally Reading Room in Schaffer Library through December.

The collections, spanning from 1899 to 1996, provide a remarkable window into the history of the American environmental movement and the tensions that erupted over efforts to conserve the Adirondack Forest Preserve and expand the Adirondack Park. The materials also give a broader understanding of the history of national park and wilderness preservation and the critical role activism played in those efforts.

Staff Sgt. Michael Sargent '08, an Army Green Beret, was recently featured in the Army Times. The story focused on his service and bravery in Afghanistan, for which he was awarded the Silver Star -- the nation's third-highest award for valor.

During his time at Union, Sargent was involved with Theta Delta Chi, men's lacrosse and Best Buddies, and spent a term abroad in India.

More than 90 performers took to the stage in the Nott Memorial recently for the Lothridge Festival of Dance. The hour-long show included highlights from this year’s Winter Dance Concert, “Minds of Interest,” inspired by artists, scientists and activists of the 20th century.

John Famulare '15 was recently featured in the Times Telegram. The story focused on his solo exhibition, "Introspection," in the 401 Gallery of the Mohawk Valley Arts Center (Little Falls, N.Y.).

As a student, Famulare participated in Steinmetz Symposium and a term abroad in Italy.

The death of pop music icon Prince was the topic of discussion in a class taught by Jennifer Milioto Matsue, associate professor/director of interdisciplinary programs.

Two faculty members were honored at a recent Women@Work event at MiSci in Schenectady.

The two were included in the March/April issue of Women@Work, a publication of the Times Union. The issue focuses on STEM education.
