Washington Post features op-ed on daylight saving time by Chad Orzel, associate professor of physics and astronomy

Chad Orzel, associate professor of physics and astronomy, touches on the origins of daylight saving time in his latest book, “A Brief History of Timekeeping: The Science of Marking Time, from Stonehenge to Atomic Clocks.”

In response to the recent Senate vote to end the annual practice, Orzel shared his thoughts in an op-ed published by the Washington Post's Made By History feature.

Repairs to the historic Nott Memorial featured in the Daily Gazette and Times Union

The Nott Memorial reopened on May 19, 2022.

The Nott Memorial, the centerpiece of Union's historic campus, is undergoing repairs to fix a leaky roof.

So for about the next three months, the College's marvelous feat of High Victorian Gothic is off limits to the campus and the public. It is the longest closure for the Nott since it went offline for nearly 18 months as it underwent an extensive multi-million dollar restoration completed in time for the College’s bicentennial in 1995.

Both the Times Union and the Daily Gazette featured photo galleries of the ongoing work.

Union College Choir's upcoming performance at Carnegie Hall featured in the Daily Gazette

The Daily Gazette recently featured the Union College Choir, which will perform for the first time at Carnegie Hall, the midtown Manhattan concert venue that is revered for its beauty, acoustics and history.

The March 20 performance in Zankel Hall is set for 6 p.m.

It will be followed by a singing engagement at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., at 2 p.m. on March 22.

Professor John Garver shares expertise on ice jams with local media

John Garver, professor of geosciences, has studied ice jams for years. Each winter when ice jams on the Mohawk River and the potential for flooding increases, Garver shares his expertise with local media.

Among the outlets that relied on Garver this winter include the Daily Gazette, WAMC, Northeast Public Radio and WTEN, the local ABC affiliate.

Garver also maintains a blog about the ice jams.

He joined Union in 1989.
