Pianist Jeremy Denk kicks off the Union College Concert Series 2013-14 Season in Memorial Chapel on Friday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m.
Denk was honored this week as one of 24 recipients of the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, commonly known as the MacArthur genius grants. Read more about the award in the Los Angeles Times.
Denk offers an innovative program connecting classical works with those influenced by jazz. In between classical works: Mozart’s Sonata in F Major, K. 533/494, Schumann’s Waldszenen, Op. 82, and Beethoven’s “Waldstein” Sonata, Op. 53, Denk will perform a new work written for him by jazz pianist Brad Mehldau along with a series of rags by Bolcom, Hindemith, Stravinsky and others.
Renowned for his insightful interpretations and inventive programming, Denk is making his sixth recital appearance on the series and performs in all the major venues throughout the country. Appearing regularly in Carnegie Hall, he will perform as soloist with the San Francisco Symphony in that venerable hall after his appearance at the College. In addition to his many performances throughout the country this season, he will be artist-in-residence at the Ojai Music Festival in 2014, and has recently completed a libretto to a new opera by Steven Stucky to be premiered at the festival.
Denk is also highly regarded for his music blog, “Think Denk” which is frequently referenced by many in the music industry and press. He also recently contributed articles in The New Yorker and the New York Times Book Review.
