A memoir by George Gmelch, professor of anthropology, was published this month by the University of Nebraska Press. "Playing with Tigers: A Minor League Chronicle of the Sixties" recounts a baseball education unlike any other as he got to know small-town life across the United States against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, civil rights protests and the emergence of the counterculture.

April Selley, senior lecturer in English, has published an essay, "Enjoying an 'Original Relation to the Universe': Star Trek: The Next Generation and Emersonian Transcendentalism" in The Star Trek Universe: Franchising the Final Frontier.

Research completed by Caelan Lapointe '15 and former Union College mechanical engineering professor, Harish Gopalan, was published in the Journal of Solar Energy Engineering - Including Wind Energy and Building Energy Conservation. "Numerical Investigation of Mini Wind Turbines Near Highways" started as Lapointe’s scholars research project. He continued working on the project through his senior year, and presented his research progress at one of the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Expositions. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Two revisions of books by Rudy Nydegger, professor emeritus, were recently released. Updated versions of “Understanding Depression” and “Dealing With Anxiety” were made available by ACB-CLIO/Greenwood.

Zoe Oxley, professor of political science and director of American Studies, co-wrote a chapter in the recently published, “Minority Voting in the United States, Volume I: African American, Women and Latino/Latina Voters.” She also guested edited a special issue of Politics, Groups, and Identities, which was recently published as a book.
