An article co-authored by David Gillikin, associate professor of geology, and Anouk Verheyden-Gillikin, lecturer of geology, was published in The Oceanography Society’s journal, Oceanography. “Paleoclimate reconstruction from oxygen isotopes in a coral skeleton from East Africa: A data-enhanced learning experience,” discusses a laboratory module developed for Union’s “Introduction to Oceanography” course.

Valerie Barr, professor of computer science, presented at the SIGCSE 2017 conference. She contributed to a special session on “CS 1: Beyond Programming” and was on a panel on "Computer Science Topics in First- and Second- Year Seminar Courses," and contributed to an additional session, “A Town Meeting: SIGCSE Committee on Expanding the Women-in-Computing Community.”

Angela Commito, visiting assistant professor of classics, co-authored “The Countryside of Aphrodisias.” The book, published by Kelsey Museum Publications, presents the archaeological remains of the region.

The University of Nebraska Press published a new book, co-edited by George Gmelch, professor of anthropology. “Baseball Beyond Our Borders: An International Pastime,” is a collection of essays that tell the story of America’s national pastime as it has spread across the world and undergone instructive, entertaining, and sometimes quirky changes in the process.

Colleges of Distinction published an article by Christine Henseler, professor of Spanish. “Want Your Kids to Have a Secure Future: Invest in a Liberal Arts Education” discusses the importance of the liberal arts and the marketability of skills after graduation.

Amanda Ervin, Makerspace coordinator, hosted a virtual tour of Union’s Makerspace with MakeSchools. The tours, held at higher education institutions around the country, are a casual sharing of design decisions for the space and services.

Claire Mouflard, visiting assistant professor of French and Francophone Studies, presented a paper, "Black Girls in the Banlieue: Between Media Coverage and Film Representations," at the 48th annual Northeast Modern Language Association convention in Baltimore. The paper addressed neocolonial media representations of girl gangs in the French projects, and portrayals of feminine solidarity in the films “Divines” by Houda Benyamina and “Bande de filles” by Céline Sciamma.
