Geology talk to focus on rare earth metals

The Geology Department will host a colloquium at 5 p.m. Monday, May 28 in Olin Auditorium, focusing on the politics and economics of rare earth metals.

Eric Cheney, emeritus professor at the University of Washington, will speak on “Geology, Economics and Politics of Ores of Rare Earth Elements.” These elements have various sophisticated and critical industrial uses and are increasing in demand. Cheney’s research also focuses on the geology and social relevance of mineral and fuel deposits in the Pacific Northwest.
