Jim Strohecker has a hobby for every season.
When he is not on campus, Jim (alongside his partner Janine) is what you would call a cruiseaholic. The couple has been on more than a dozen Royal Caribbean cruises since they got together seven years ago. They enjoy basking in the sun on the deck and the sights and sounds at the ports of call. When they aren’t cruising, Jim is on his 34-foot Formula boat and jet skis on the Hudson River.
On any given winter night, you can find him officiating hockey at one of the many Capital Region ice rinks for youth, high school and college club teams. He still plays men’s league hockey in his spare time at the YMCA in Bethlehem. He’s also an avid skier, having recently taken a trip to Beaver Creek, Vail and Breckinridge, Colo.
On campus, Strohecker is the assistant director of Learning Environments. His team is responsible for maintaining electronic classrooms and all other audio/visual spaces on campus.
He has four grown children (two of whom attended Union) and three grandkids. He came to Union in 1999.
FIRST APP YOU LOOK AT IN THE MORNING:
Gmail. I have to see what is happening today and what questions or problems may have happened overnight.
ONE BOOK YOU HAVE READ MULTIPLE TIMES:
I have read the Harry Potter books at least twice.
BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED:
My dad always said: “There is no such thing as on time. You're either early or late.”
FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS:
Messa Rink. There is nothing like going to a game, playing a game, or officiating a game in Messa Rink. I have been going there since I was 6 years old.
I am a big diner fan, whether it is Latham 76 Diner or a greasy spoon somewhere. Breakfast is always ham, scrambled eggs, home fries and white toast with butter.
NETFLIX OR AMAZON:
Amazon for sure. I cannot wait for season 3 of Tom Clancy's “Jack Ryan.”
I do not listen to podcasts. That being said, I have listened to Royal Caribbean bloggers podcasts on an occasion or two to get tips on my next cruises.
ONE SKILL YOU WISH YOU HAD:
Auto or boat mechanic. It would be a lot cheaper and easier for my life if I knew exactly what I was doing under the hood/hatch instead of using a hammer to fix things.
BEST PART OF YOUR DAY:
I just love walking around campus, seeing or greeting people. Whenever I get a chance to stroll through campus, I take the opportunity.
LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT YOU:
I am an introvert until you start talking to me, then you will not be able to shut me up. I always say, when I am in a room I want to be like a chameleon.
