Deidre Hill Butler, professor of sociology and chair of the department, presented her research virtually at the 12th annual Africa Conference at Tennessee State University on April 16. Centered on the conference theme, “Identities, Continuities, and Transformations: Women, Youth, and Children in Africa and the African Diaspora,” her presentation, “Womanist Homeplaces: Black Diaspora Placemaking in Ireland,” highlighted the intersections of Black feminist thought, diasporic identity, and placemaking in Ireland.
Mark Dallas, professor of political science, along with researchers from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, presented research and new policy innovations to the Council of Economic Advisors at the White House in Washington, D.C. on March 18. The overarching topic concerned proposed improvements to U.S. economic security, and policy proposals ranged from how to build an industrial commons in the U.S., achieve speed to scale in industry, how to defend supply chains and better collaborate with allies and partners to achieve common economic security goals.
David P. Gillikin, the William D. Williams Professor of Geosciences and chair of the department, Anouk Verheyden, senior lecturer in geosciences and Andrea Olanescu '26 co-authored an abstract with others from the University at Albany and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. The abstract, "Coral Geochemical Data Track Spatial Evolution of Surface Water in the Red Sea," was presented at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in Glasgow, Scotland. The work is part of NSF grant awarded to Gillikin.
Stacie Raucci, the Frank Bailey Professor of Classics, gave the Spring 2026 Matyskiela Lecture in Greek and Roman Classics at Temple University in Philadelphia. She presented a talk, "Fabric(ating) Artifacts: Ancient Objects in 21st-Century Fashion." This talk is part of her current research on ancient Greek and Roman inspirations in fashion design. Raucci has also been appointed to the editorial board of the new American Journal of Classical Reception.
