Yifei Guan, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, was a co-author of “Semi-analytical eddy-viscosity and backscattering closures for 2-D geophysical turbulence,” in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics. This work develops a semi-analytical framework based on two-dimensional turbulence theory to determine parameters for eddy-viscosity and backscattering models used in large-eddy simulation.
Guan was also a co-author of “Prediction of Extreme Events in Multiscale Simulations of Geophysical Turbulence using Reinforcement Learning” in the Journal of Computational Science. This work uses reinforcement learning in multiscale simulations of geophysical turbulence, with a focus on predicting extreme events.
Marlow Guerrant, visiting assistant professor of psychology, presented an oral research talk and continuing education workshop at GLMA's 44th Annual Conference on LGBTQ+ Health in Seattle, Wsh., “Let’s Tok About S3x: Sexual Health Literacy Gaps and Social Media-Based Education Among LGBTQ+ Emerging Adults.” The research project was funded by a three-year grant from the GLMA Lesbian Health Fund.
Mason Stahl, the James M. Kenney Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering, chaired a conference session on “Big Data and Machine Learning Applications in Hydrogeology” at the International Association of Hydrogeologists annual meeting in Budapest, Hungary. He also presented a talk, “Hydrologic controls on arsenic contamination of rice and groundwater: insights from Cambodia.” This talk highlighted research involving a number of Union Geosciences and ESPE students including Amelia Casassa '26, Sienna Chambial '27, Keith Lawless '25, Alexandra Lim '27 and Devin Snyder '24.
