Research Assistance

Types of Assistance

A Research Services librarian can help you to:

  • Search the catalog to find books, government documents, journals, DVDs, and other resources from the library's collection

  • Choose the databases and the other resources that would be best suited to your research needs

  • Learn the most effective ways of searching databases and of locating peer-reviewed scholarly articles and books for your research projects

  • Distinguish between peer-reviewed sources and sources that have not been filtered through that specific type of quality control process

  • Figure out how to retrieve the full-text of online journal articles

  • Judge the credibility, reliability, and the authority of a source that you plan to use in your research - whether it comes from the Web or elsewhere

  • Retrieve statistical or factual data from a variety of sources

  • Locate an item in the collection, a room in the library, or a building or service on campus, or find directions to off-campus locations

  • Figure out how to print, copy, scan, renew items you currently have checked out, access Nexus, or request research material not owned by the library
