Schaffer Library now has over half of our print collection available in digital format to the Union community!

200,000 volumes digitally available

Schaffer Library is pleased to announce that a little over half (200,000 volumes) of our print collection is now available to the Union community digitally. These can be accessed via Primo, the library search interface, at Schaffer Library Website, or via Hathi Trust. Access stipulations and instructions are below.

Digital access to our print collection has been made possible through our membership with the HathiTrust Digital Library, specifically HathiTrust’s Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS). ETAS provides partner libraries digital access to their copyright-protected print collections through the fair use doctrine when physical access is restricted. All copyrighted texts in our collection that are also in the HathiTrust Digital Library are now available to Union digitally.

Access Stipulations:

The access stipulations are as follows:

  • Access is largely limited to the screen; downloads are only one page at a time.

  • The number of concurrent users of a digital copy is equal to the number of physical copies of the work in our collection. (E.g. if Schaffer only has one copy of a book, then only one user at a time will be able to access the digital copy.)

  • Check outs are one-hour long but renew automatically, unless another user requests the book.

  • Renewals are otherwise unlimited.

Access Instructions:

  1. To access digital copies of our print collection via Primo, visit the Schaffer Library Website and search as you normally would.

Results labeled “Available at Schaffer Library HathiTrust COVID-19 (CALL NUMBER)” [my emphasis] are texts from our print collection that are now available digitally on HathiTrust.

Click on a record of interest with that label. Then, click the “HathiTrust (COVID-19 emergency access)” link, which will take you to HathiTrust.

Sign in to HathiTrust by clicking “Log In” in the upper right, and in the “Find your partner institution” drop-down list, select “Union College,” and lastly click “Continue.” Then, sign in via your Union email prefix and email password.

Then, click the “Temporary Access” link and the “Check Out” button to access the work.

Nota bene: be sure to sign in with your Union credentials to HathiTrust when Primo redirects you to that page. Otherwise your text will be inaccessible.
  2. To access digital copies of our print collection via HathiTrust, visit their website and sign in. Click “Log In” in the upper right, and in the “Find your partner institution” drop-down list, select “Union College,” and lastly click “Continue.” Then, sign in via your Union email prefix and email password.

Then, search HathiTrust as you normally would.

The results page will display records marked “Temporary Access,” “Full View,” or “Limited (Search Only).” Those marked “Temporary Access” are texts from the Schaffer collection made accessible via ETAS. “Full View” texts are not restricted by copyright, and those marked “Limited (Search Only)” are copyright protected and not owned by Schaffer, and thus only accessible in snippet view.

To access Schaffer texts, click “Temporary Access” and then “Check Out.”
