Five honored with Gilman Scholarship

Five Union students were honored with the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Union team pedals to another trophy

For the second year in a row, a group of riders from the College won the Gearshaft award for most participants from Schenectady County in the annual Bike to Work Day Workplace Challenge.

Sponsored by the Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC), the event promotes bicycling as a fun way to commute to work for employers in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties.

Volunteers of the Week

This week’s Kenney Community Center Volunteers of the Week are Olivia Britton ’18, Sharmeen Azher ’17, Mike Presendieu ’16 and Julia Tierney ’15, as well as ceramics instructor Nancy Niefield. 

The honorees were all recently recipients of Volunteer of the Year Awards at the annual Kenney Center Volunteer Appreciation Banquet on May 21.

UCARE Day slated for Sunday

The Kenney Center's annual UCARE Day, a free carnival for kids and their families, is Sunday, May 31 from noon to 3 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse. 

With over 100 students working to host a carnival for local kids and their families, UCARE Day is one of Union’s biggest volunteer events of the year. Organizers are expecting 500 local kids and their families to come to campus.

A 38-person team from the College recently participated in the CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge in Albany. Alan Taylor, the Marie Louise Bailey Professor of Mathematics, was the top finisher from the Union team.

People in the news

At a recent event, the Schenectady County Human Rights Commission honored several members of the Union community. Five students won the Youth Award for the Empty Bowls event. They are Jennifer Sexton ’15Gerardo Reyes ’15Bin Chen ’15Stefan Basile ’15 and Adam Rosenthal ’15Angela Tatem, director of the Kenney Community Center, was honored with an Individual Award.

Students, faculty celebrate Roman anniversary with fellow schools

Rome celebrated its 2,768th anniversary on April 21 with parades and fireworks, but it wasn't the only recognition of the birth of this city. Union College participates in an annual Undergraduate Research Conference in Classics or Parilia, a celebration of the founding of Rome, with

Skidmore College, Hamilton College and Colgate University.

Four from Union named Fulbright grant winners

Four members of the Union community were recently awarded Fulbright

English Teaching Assistant Grants.  The program places grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction and to provide a native speaker presence in the classrooms.
