Thoracic surgeon Dr. Richard Lazzaro '84 comes to Alumni Speaker Series

Lazzaro

Dr. Richard Lazzaro ’84, the chief of thoracic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and a respected specialist in minimally-invasive procedures, will talk on “The Benefits of Robotic Surgery” on Monday, April 23, at 12:50 p.m. in Reamer Auditorium.

Coinciding with Lazzaro’s visit, students will have a chance to “test drive” the DaVinci Surgical System from 9 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. in Wold Atrium. The technology allows surgeons to perform complex procedures with small, precise movements of tiny instruments monitored through high-definition 3D imagery.

Lazzaro’s program was named a Center of Excellence Epicenter for Robotic Thoracic Surgery. Surgeons frequently travel to Lenox Hill Hospital to learn robotic thoracic surgery techniques from Lazzaro and his team. He has achieved the highest quality rating from the National Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for three consecutive years.

Lazzaro, a board certified cardiothoracic and general surgeon, is a graduate of Union’s six-year biomedical program. He completed his specialty training in advanced minimally invasive thoracic surgery in 1997.

His talk is part of the Alumni Speaker Series.
