And Never Stop Dancing

Author:
Gordon Livingston

Summary:
A Troy, New York native, Livignston was a West Point graduate and Army physician during the Vietnam War who risked being court-martialed for protesting the war as an active captain. After being sent home from the war, disillusioned from his experience and called an "embarrassment to command", he began his career as a psychiatrist in Baltimore, Maryland. At the end of his career, Livngston sat down and wrote a series of books about dealing with life, ourselves and our minds, and grief. It's a follow up to his book Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart, but this one has some great nuggets of wisdom. I highly recommend this title to anyone coming to terms with their place in the world, and coming to terms with the world they're inheriting.

Beautyland

Author:
Marie-Helene Bertino

Summary:
This book completely surprised me. What starts as clever observations from an alien reporting on human behavior via fax machine becomes a devastating meditation on loneliness and belonging. Adina's sharp, sometimes cutting commentary begins funny but transforms into something deeply emotional as she grows up and becomes more human herself. Similar to The Humans by Matt Haig but more emotionally resonant. This one gets under your skin.

What Readers Love:

  • Light sci-fi
  • Coming of age
  • Fax machine reports from aliens
  • Sharp insight into human nature
  • Funny & heartbreaking
  • Outsiders finding their people

The Devil's Historians: how modern extremists abuse the medieval past

Author:
Kaufman, Amy S., & Sturtevant, Paul B

Genre:
Non-fiction

Summary:
In this book, Amy S. Kaufman and Paul B. Sturtevant examine the long, dark history of "The Devil's Historians"--people who manipulate and use myths about the medieval past to promote discrimination, oppression, and murder. Tracing the fetish for "medieval times" behind toxic ideologies like nationalism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, misogyny, and white supremacy from European imperialists right up to the present-day "alt-right," Kaufman and Sturtevant show us that the Middle Ages have been twisted for political purposes ever since they came to a close. The Devil's Historians also casts aside the myths of an oppressive, patriarchal medieval monoculture and reveals a medieval world you may not have learned in school: one that is diverse, thriving, courageous, and compelling, and far more complex than those who want to bring us back to the Middle Ages would have you believe.-- UTP.

What Readers Love:

  • Debunks medieval myths
  • Scholarly but page-turning
  • How extremists weaponize history
  • Diversity of Middle Ages
  • New understanding of hate groups

The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear

Author:
Walter Moers

Genre:
Fiction

Summary:
It is one of the most magical books I have read in a very long time. It chronicles the adventures of, you guessed it, Captain Bluebear on a mythical continent that used to exist on our planet called Zamonia. It is very humorous and the style is very Douglas Adams, but not cynical in any capacity.

What Readers Love:

  • Magical continent
  • Minipirates & sugar deserts
  • Author's gorgeous illustrations
  • Endlessly inventive fantasy
  • Madcap characters
  • Funny

Captain Bluebear

The Tao of Pooh

Author:
Benjamin Hoff

Genre:
Fiction

Summary:
I don't know about any of you, but Winnie the Pooh was the source of a lot of childhood entertainment. Between the Disney movies, books, and the classic song by Loggins and Messina, there's a lot of positive connotation with the silly old bear. And I'm not afraid to say it, it's nice to revisit some of our old interests with new eyes. Published in 1982, Hoff puts himself in the Hundred Acre Wood and talks with all of the characters and begins a dialogue with them. Hoff essentially positions Pooh Bear as the greatest practitioner of Taoism (in fictional pop culture at least). An easy, quick read this book is a great introduction to Eastern philosophy and helps put into perspective our own reactions to stressful and unpleasant situations.

What Readers Love:

  • Winnie-the-Pooh meets Eastern philosophy
  • Surprisingly profound & practical
  • Perfect introduction to Taoism
  • Simple wisdom for complex times
  • Pooh as the ideal sage

Joyland

Author:
Stephen King

Genre:
Fiction

Summary:
Amusement rides, a heartbroken student in a mascot costume, and murder. Not the ingredients that I would necessarily make for a great summer reading, but there it is. King's Joyland is reminiscent of my own youth and time enjoying small town carnivals and state fairs during the Summer, but this book kicks it up a notch. Another great read, and something you can really sink your teeth into (while also sinking your teeth into a funnel cake). Recommended for leisurely reading at a lake, beach, summer camp, or your favorite reading nook.

What Readers Love:

  • Coming-of-age
  • Summer job at haunted carnival
  • Heartbreak meets mystery
  • Nostalgic 1970s setting
  • Carny life authentically portrayed
  • Bittersweet rather than terrifying
