Who can use ILL Services?
The service is only available to faculty, staff and students currently enrolled at Union College. Faculty Emeriti may also request research materials through the Interlibrary Loan Service. Individuals who have courtesy borrowing privileges are not eligible for interlibrary loan. If you are unsure as to the status of your account please check with the Circulation Department at (518) 388-6280 before requesting ILL.
- How do I request ILL Material?
When will my request be proceed?
All items requested through interlibrary loan are processed as quickly as possible. Most requests are processed within twenty-four hours of their arrival in the ILL Office.
How long does it take for material to arrive?
Periodical articles may arrive from lending sources within hours after they are ordered. Books may take from a few days to a few weeks. Some requests for books or periodical articles may require much longer. To help us, please indicate your time limit. Please discuss any special needs with the Shared Resources Librarian or the Interlibrary Loan Specialist, Gordon Rood.
What types of materials can be borrowed?
Almost anything may be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan. However, some things are harder to locate and borrow. Reference materials, dissertations and theses, complete issues of periodicals, rare books, genealogical materials, video tapes, audio tapes or CDs, and computer disks are often unavailable or can take longer for us to find a lender. Materials that are available in Schaffer Library or PRIMO should not be requested through ILL. Items that are lost, assumed missing, or at the bindery may be requested.
How much does it cost?
At this time the library pays all charges. Most items are available from libraries with whom Union has reciprocal "no charge" policies. Users should know that borrowing may cost the library an average out-of-pocket expense of between $3.00 and $35.00 per item. To help us keep our costs down please examine your requests carefully. Keep in mind that we may return requests to you that are not available from our "no charge" lenders if it is determined that the cost for these items appears to be in excess of their research value. Be assured that we are committed to obtaining the research material you need.
Where do I pick up and return ILL materials?
You will receive an email indicating when ILL materials are available.
Non-returnable items (photocopies) will be available electronically through the ILLiad system. Books will be charged out to your library account and may be picked up and returned to the Circulation-Reserves-Interlibrary Loan Desk in Schaffer Library. You are responsible for observing the conditions of the lending library which may restrict use of material to the library as well as prohibiting photocopying. You will be held responsible for any damage or loss incurred while borrowed material is in your possession.
DO NOT REMOVE ANY PAPERWORK OR PAPER BANDS attached to an ILL book.
How long may I keep a book borrowed through ILL?
Loan periods range from 2 to 4 weeks. All loan periods are set by the lending libraries. Some libraries restrict use of their books to "library use only."
What are the fine policies for ILL books?
Overdue fines are set at $1.00 per volume (two volume title is fined $2 per day) per day overdue from the due date noted on the outside of the book. Overdue books may not be renewed.
How do I renew a book borrowed through ILL?
LL will request one renewal. Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending institution. The book band on your ILL book will note whether or not renewals are prohibited. Request a renewal by bringing the book(s) to the Interlibrary Loan Desk at least two days before the due date. Ask to fill out an Interlibrary Loan Renewal Request. Overdue books will not be renewed.
NOTE: Interlibrary Loan Books are NOT eligible for the Thesis Loan extended loan period.
